The education system in Scotland follows the Curriculum for Excellence, which emphasizes a holistic approach to education, focusing on developing four capacities: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors. The other UK countries differ from that used in Scotland and from one another to a lesser extent. Wales is more similar to Scotland, although it focuses on six areas of learning and experience, while England and Northern Ireland are comparable, with some regional adaptations.
In Scotland, children typically start primary school at age five and continue until age twelve, after which they progress to secondary school until age eighteen.
Elgin offers a variety of educational institutions catering to different age groups and academic needs. The town has several nursery schools and primary schools, as well as three secondary schools.
Elgin Academy is the largest school in Moray, with a history going back to the Middle Ages. Its first school was located on the adjacent corners of Academy Street and Francis Place, currently the site of the local youth cafe. Its second academy was built in 1801 on the site now hosting Moray College. The third Academy building was built in the late 1960s. Plans to merge the academy with Elgin High School were rejected after a public consultation in 2006. Instead, a new building was built in 2012.
Gordonstoun School is a co-educational independent school for boarding and day pupils in Moray. It is named after the 150-acre estate owned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 17th century, on which it sits. The school is situated in Duffus, on the north-west edge of Elgin. Gordonstoun features eight boarding houses, including two 17th-century buildings that were part of the original estate.
Elgin High School is a secondary school on Edgar Road in Elgin. Its catchment area traditionally lies south of the railway line, encompassing New Elgin and outlying villages. It uses a House system comprising Arran, Harris, Iona, Jura, and Skye.
A college of the University of the Highlands and Islands, Moray College is a further education institution in Elgin. It was opened in 1971 as Elgin Technical College and assumed its current name in 1978. The college's main campus is in central Elgin, with Learning Centres also located in Buckie and Forres, and its Engineering and Construction programmes based in the Technology Centre campus in New Elgin.

Founded in 1831, East End is a non-denominational primary school with a nursery programme and students in the P1-P7 age range. The school has a split site: one classroom, a PE hall, and a music room housed in the original building, while the rest of the classrooms are in the main building. Elgin Academy, dating back to the Middle Ages, is the oldest school in Elgin and the largest in Moray, Scotland. The cookery school operates from the original ballroom of the Oakwood building on the outskirts of Elgin. Opened in 2011, the school runs a few classes weekly, which may be a mixture of evening classes, full-day classes, children's birthday parties, kid's cookery classes, or corporate classes. Formally known as S.E. Productions, the dance and theatre school opened in 2020, offering a wide variety of weekly classes to children aged 3-18. Specialising in performance, the school gives students several opportunities to be on stage, and its connections with other local theatre groups give its students the chance to perform as much as possible.
