Bangor University is one of Wales' most distinctive higher education institutions, a university whose identity is shaped by its origins in the slate-quarrying communities of north-west Wales, its dramatic coastal-mountain setting, and its long tradition of academic excellence in both the sciences and the humanities.

Bangor University was founded in 1884 as the University College of North Wales, one of the three original constituent colleges of the University of Wales. Its creation was driven by a remarkable grassroots movement in which local quarrymen and working families contributed from their wages to establish a university for the people of north Wales. Its community-funded origin remains one of the most distinctive aspects of Bangor's identity.

The University College of North Wales opened in 1884. Its iconic main building, now the Main Arts Building, was completed and opened by King Edward VII in 1911. From the 1920s to the 1960s, there was an expansion of science departments, teacher training, and Welsh studies. In the 1990s and 2000s, the university transitioned from UCNW to Bangor University, with new research centres and modern facilities.

Bangor University is organised into three main colleges, each containing multiple schools and academic units.

Among UK universities, Bangor University stands out for its community-funded origins, spectacular natural setting, marine and environmental sciences programme, Welsh-language leadership, strong psychology and neuroscience research, historic architecture, and Bangor's cathedral city academic culture.
