Education in Barry fits within the wider framework of Welsh public education, as well as a long local tradition of schooling and a contemporary mix of public, faith-based, Welsh-medium, and vocational programmes.

Wales operates a national education system overseen by the Welsh Government, with local delivery managed by councils such as the Vale of Glamorgan. The system includes English-medium, Welsh-medium, and bilingual schools; a statutory curriculum emphasising the four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales; and a strong commitment to inclusion and additional support for learning. The Vale of Glamorgan Council coordinates admissions, pupil support services, and specialist provision for learners with additional needs, including educational psychologists, specialist teachers, and welfare officials.

Barry's educational tradition grew alongside its transformation from a small village to a major coal-exporting port in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the docks expanded, so did the need for organised schooling for the families of dockworkers, railway employees, and associated trades. This produced a network of primary and secondary schools that served a diverse and rapidly growing population. Over time, the town developed a reputation for strong community-centred schools and a commitment to both academic and vocational pathways, and this continues today.

Barry offers a range of public and voluntary-aided schools across primary and secondary levels.

The town is home to several primary schools, which serve children from age five to eleven, including Welsh-language and faith-based schools. These include Barry Island Primary School, Cadoxton Primary School, Colcot Primary School, Gladstone Primary School, High Street Primary School, Holton Primary School, Jenner Park Primary School, Oakfield Primary School, Palmerston Primary School, and Romilly Primary School. Faith-based primary schools include All Saints (Church in Wales) Primary School, St. Helen's (Roman Catholic) Infants School, and St. Helen's (Roman Catholic) Junior School. Welsh-medium primary schools in Barry include Ysgol Gwaun y Nant, Ysgol Nant Talwg, Ysgol Sant Baruc, and Ysgol Sant Curig.

There are four secondary schools in Barry: Pencoedtre High School (English-medium), Whitemore High School (English-medium), St. Richard Gwyn Catholic High School (English-medium, faith-based), and Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg (Welsh-medium, ages 3-9).

Welsh-medium education is a significant part of Barry's educational identity. Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg provides a full Welsh-medium pathway from early years through secondary, while other Welsh-medium primary schools feed into it. This aligns with the Vale of Glamorgan's Welsh in Education Strategic Plan, which aims to expand access to Welsh-medium learning across the region.

Those who are interested in further education after secondary school, or in preparing themselves for the workplace, can find at least a part of what they may need right in Barry. The Barry Campus of Cardiff and Vale College is the largest CAVC site in the Vale of Glamorgan. It offers a wide range of courses, including technical training, apprenticeships, creative industries, construction, engineering, and service-sector qualifications. Major investment is underway on new facilities, including the Barry Waterfront Campus and an Advanced Technology Centre, which will expand specialist training in engineering, digital technologies, and applied sciences.

Other adult learning opportunities are available through community programmes, workplace training partnerships, and council-supported initiatives aimed at upskilling residents and supporting employment pathways.

The Vale of Glamorgan provides a support structure for learners with additional needs, including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and specialist teachers. These services ensure that pupils in Barry's school have access to tailored support, particularly those who are vulnerable or have significant learning needs.
