Cardiff, the capital and largest city of Wales, has evolved from a coal-exporting powerhouse into a more diversified economy defined by services, creative industries, advanced manufacturing, and a growing professional sector.

As the administrative, cultural, and commercial centre of Wales, the city supports a broad range of industries that serve both local communities and national markets. Its economic landscape blends legacy sectors with new, knowledge-driven enterprises, creating a resilient and adaptable urban economy.

Cardiff's economy is dominated by services, which account for the majority of employment and business activity. The city's strategic location, strong transport links, and role as the seat of Welsh Government have attracted major employers in finance, law, media, and public administration. Alongside these sectors, Cardiff retains a meaningful industrial base, including advanced manufacturing, engineering, and repair services. Construction, contracting, and property development continue to expand as the city grows, while creative and digital industries have become increasingly influential.

While the city is no longer defined by heavy industry, manufacturing remains an integral part of Cardiff's economic identity. Modern manufacturing focuses on electronics and technology components, supported by skilled labour and proximity to research institutions such as Cardiff University; engineering and precision manufacturing, including firms producing specialised machinery and industrial components; food and beverage production, with several regional producers operating in and around the city; and pharmaceutical and biomedical manufacturing, benefitting from the city's strong life sciences research environment. These industries are typically smaller and more specialised than the large-scale operations of the past, but they contribute significantly to innovation and exports.

Construction and contracting are among Cardiff's most dynamic sectors. The city has experienced sustained redevelopment over the past decades, including the transformation of Cardiff Bay into a major residential, commercial, and cultural district; the expansion of university campuses, research facilities, and student accommodation; the growth of housing development across the metropolitan area; and major infrastructure projects, such as transport improvements. Contractors include general construction companies, electrical and HVAC services, plumbing, landscaping, painting, and specialist trades.

Cardiff has established itself as one of the UK's key centres for financial and professional services, including banking and insurance, financial technology, accountancy, auditing, business consultancy, and legal services. The presence of the Welsh Government and national institutions strengthens demand for high-level professional expertise.

Cardiff's legal sector is one of the largest in Wales, hosting the regional offices of major UK law firms; specialist chambers, and solicitors serving commercial, civil, and criminal law; public-sector legal departments linked to government, councils, and regulatory bodies; and niche practices in areas such as environmental law, maritime law, and intellectual property. The city's legal community benefits from Cardiff University's respected law school, which supplies a steady stream of graduates and research partnerships.

Cardiff has a long tradition in publishing and printing, now complemented by a thriving creative sector. Key components include newspapers and magazines, book and academic publishing, commercial printing, broadcasting and media, and digital content creation.

While Cardiff's industrial past has given way to a service-dominated present, manufacturing, repair trades, and construction remain vital components of its economic fabric.
