The city of Newport, located on the River Usk in the historic county of Monmouthshire, is one of South Wales' most dynamic urban centres. Its health and public-safety landscape reflects both its industrial heritage and its modern role as a regional hub for healthcare, emergency response, and community wellbeing.

The city benefits from its comprehensive network of medical, wellness, and emergency services, supported by collaborative governance structures such as Safer Newport Community Safety Partnership, which provides strategic oversight of crime prevention and public protection across the city.

Healthcare in Newport is primarily delivered through Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), which oversees hospitals, community clinics, and specialist services across Gwent.

Key facilities include Royal Gwent Hospital. Historically the city's main acute hospital, it now focuses on urgent care, diagnostics, outpatient care, and specialist services. Grange University Hospital, nearby in Cwmbran, is the region's. centre for major emergency and critical care. Community Health and Wellbeing Centres, such as the 19 Hills Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ringland, provides GP services, community nursing, mental-health support, and wellbeing programmes.

Newport hosts several GP surgeries, district nursing teams, midwifery services, and community mental-health teams. These services form the backbone of preventative and long-term care, ensuring residents have access to routine medical support close to home.

While major trauma and complex surgery are centralised at the Grange University Hospital, Newport residents continue to access day-case surgery, minor surgical procedures, and specialist outpatient surgicsl clinics, which are integrated with regional pathways.

Newport offers a wide range of NHS and private dental practices that provide routine check-ups and hygiene, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry.

Opticians and eye-care clinics across the city deliver NHS eye examinations, glaucoma screening, diabetic retinopathy monitoring, contact-lens services, and specialist referrals to opththalmology. These services operate in partnership with ABUHB's hospital-based eye departments.

Newport's growing interest in holistic and complementary health has led to a diverse range of services, including chiropractic care, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine providers, massage therapy, reflexology, and aromatherapy studios, as well as wellness centres providing mindfulness, yoga, and stress-relieving programmes.

Newport's veterinary sector includes small-animal veterinary practices, emergency veterinary hospitals, specialist services, such as orthopaedics, dermatology, and dental care for animals.

Public safety in Newport is coordinated through Safer Newport, the city's statutory community-safety partnership established under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. It brings together Gwent Police, Newport City Council, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and probation, health, and voluntary-sector partners.

Gwent Police provides law-enforcement services across newport, including neighbourhood policing, emergency response, criminal investigations, community engagement, and public-order management. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) play a visible role in neighbourhood reassurance and problem-solving, including deployments to areas experiencing vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service operates from strategically located stations across the region, providing fire suppression, road-traffic collision response, water-rescue capability, fire-safety education, and community-risk reduction programmes.

The Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST) delivers emergency ambulance response, rapid response vehicles, non-emergency patient transfer, and community first-responder programmes. WAST works closely with ABUHB hospitals and the Grange University Hospital's emergeny department to ensure timely care for life-threatening conditions.
