Education in Swansea forms a central part of the city's civic identity, reflecting the broader Welsh educational framework as well as the particular character of local communities.

As with the rest of Wales, Swansea's educational system is overseen by the Welsh Government and administered locally by the City and County of Swansea Council. The system is shaped by a commitment to blingualism, inclusivity, and community engagement, with schools and training providers working to meet the needs of a diverse and evolving population.

Swansea follows the national structure of education in Wales, which includes the Foundation Phase (ages 3-7), Key Stages 2-4 (ages 7-16), Post-16 education in sixth forms, further education colleges, and work-based learning, and Higher education, most notably through Swansea University and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).

The Welsh curriculum places emphasis on the development of literacy and numeracy, the Welsh language, and the new Curriculum for Wales, which encourages cross-disciplinary learning and the development of "ambitious, capable learners" and "ethical, informed citizens."

Swansea's schools operate within this national framework while responding to local priorities, including the promotion of Welsh-medium education, support for pupils from varied socio-economic backgrounds, and the integration of digital skills across the curriculum.

Overall, Swansea's educational system is regarded as robust and steadily improving. Many schools perform well in Estyn inspections, and the city has invested significantly in modernising school buildings through the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme (formerly 21st Century Schools). This has resulted in new or refurbished facilities that support contemporary teaching methods and improved accessibility.

The strengths of Swansea's educational system includes a strong network of Welsh-medium schools, a well-developed further education sector, close links between schools, colleges, and universities, and a growing emphasis on apprenticeships and work-based learning.

Challenges remain, as in many urban areas, including socio-economic disparities between neighbourhoods and the need for continued investment in specialist support services. However, the city's collaborative approach between schools, the council, and local employers provides a strong foundation for ongoing improvement.

Swansea hosts a wide range of schools, both governmental (maintained) and independent, serving communities across the city and surrounding villages.

Ysgol Gymraeg Bryn y Môr, Ysgol Gymraeg Tan‑y‑Lan, and Ysgol Gymraeg Lon‑las are among the leading Welsh‑medium primary schools, known for strong community engagement and high standards of Welsh‑language provision. Oystermouth Primary School, Sketty Primary School, and Newton Primary School are well‑regarded English‑medium schools with consistently positive inspection outcomes.

Bishopston Comprehensive School is often noted for its strong academic performance and broad extracurricular programme. Oichfa School, one of the largest secondary schools in Wales, is recognised for its academic results, pastoral care, and inclusive ethos. Pentrehafod School and Morriston Comprehensive School serve diverse communities and have benefited from significant investment in facilities. Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr and Ysgol Gyfun Bryn Tawe provide Welsh‑medium secondary education, contributing to the city’s bilingual future.

Ffynone House School, near the city centre, is Swansea's principal independent secondary school. Known for small class sizes and a traditional academic focus, it attracts pupils across the region.

Gower College Swansea, one of Wales' largest FE institutions, offers A-levels and academic paathways, vocational qualifications (BTECs, NVQs, and others), apprenticeships in partnership with local employers, adult learning and community education, and specialist training in engineering, hospitality, health, social care, and ditigal technologies.

Swansea is home to two major universities, including Swansea University, with campuses at Singleton Park and Bay Campus; and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), which has a strong presence in the city, particularly in education, humanities, and creative industries.

Other forms of training and lifelong learning includes work-based learning providers, adult education programmes, specialist training centres, and community centres and libraries.
