The county seat of Alabama's Lauderdale County is Florence, named after Florence, the capital of Tuscany, Italy. It was incorporated in 1826 and is the birthplace of W.C. Handy, who is known as the "Father of the Blues," as well as to Sam Phillips who discovered Elvis Presley, and home to festivals celebrating both.
