The county seat of Marion County, Alabama, is the city of Hamilton, which was originally called Toll Gate, after the gate on the old Military Road where the city now sits. That road was built by the army after General Andrew Jackson ordered the road developed as a shortcut between New Orleans and Nashville after they won the battle at New Orleans in 1815.
