The county seat of Dale County Alabama, the city of Ozark was originally peopled by the Creek Indians and was given its current name in 1855 after a man traveling through town suggested that the area reminded him of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. Prior to that it was called Merricks, in honor of a Revolutionary War veteran, and then Woodshop.
