Located in Maricopa County, the town of Fountain Hills, Arizona was home to Fort McDowell in 1865 to protect the area from hostile Indians while the rest of the continent was involved in the War Between the States. The town was built around what was to be a man-made lake in the 1960s and 1970s, but due to the fact that the lake would have flooded Fort McDowell and its homes, it never happened.
