Located in the western part of the state, Van Buren is the seat of Crawford County, Arkansas. Settled in 1818, the community was first known as Phillips Landing, but when a post office was constructed in 1831, it was renamed Van Buren after the newly appointed Secretary of State, Martin Van Buren.
