Auburn, named in honor of the village in Oliver Goldsmith’s poem, “The Deserted Village.” It is the county seat of Placer County, in the Sierra Nevada Gold Country. Gold was discovered there in 1848 in what was later called the Auburn Ravine, and it was called North Fork Dry Diggings and then Woods Dry Diggings before being renamed Auburn.
