Located in Humboldt County, the city of Fortuna was a settlement called Slide in 1874. It was named after the natural slide in town. In 1875, the name was changed to Springville, and finally, in 1884, it was changed to its current name to avoid confusion with another town named Springville. The word fortuna means fortune in Spanish.
