Half Moon Bay is situated along the Pacific Coast of San Mateo County, California. The city began as an agricultural community, primarily for the grazing of cattle used by the Mission San Francisco de Asis, in the early 1800s. The first settlement there was initially known as San Benito, later renamed Spanishtown, which was officially named Half Moon Bay in 1874.
