Hanford is the county seat of Kings County, California. Many of the surrounding communities are outside the city limits but share the city’s zip code. In 1880, in what is now known as the Mussel Slough Tragedy, started out as a dispute over land titles between settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad. A gun fight erupted on a farm just outside of town which left seven men dead. The incident was the subject of the book “Blood Money.”
