Situated in Riverside County, the California city of Indio is is at the halfway point for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Los Angeles and Yuma, which is why it was settled. It was originally called Indian Wells, but there was another city by that name, so the townspeople settled on the name Indio, which is Spanish for "Indian."
