The city of Lompoc, situated in Santa Barbara County, is named for the Chumash word which means “little lake” or “lagoon.” Originally established as a temperance colony, it became home to Vandenberg Air Force Base, the Air Force’s first missile base and population boomed. After the explosion of the Challenger in 1986, the program was essentially shut down and Lompoc entered a severe recession, which was eased only after the city turned to a tourist economy.
