The coastal city of Morro Bay is situated in San Luis Obispo County, at the mouth of Morro Creek, where the Chumash Indians had settled. In 1542, Portuguese navigator Juan Cabrillo discovered the area, and in it, Morro Rock, which he named “El Moro,” because it seemed to him to resemble the turbaned head of a Moor. Founded in 1870 as a port town, it is now a tourist destination.
