Pleasanton, a city in Alameda County, California, was named for Union Army Major General Alfred Pleasonton. A postal employee apparently misspelled it, which is how it got the spelling. It was one of the places that the legendary robber Joaquin Murrieta would hide out after ambushing and robbing prospectors.
