The city of San Dimas, located in the California county of Los Angeles, was first explored in 1774, and it was settled in the early 1800s and was called Mud Springs, due to the fact that mud springs abound in the area. It was the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887 that the area itself was mapped. Shortly thereafter, the streets were laid out. It was incorporated as a city in 1960. It is said to have been named in honor of the “Good Thief,” who hung on a cross next to Jesus.
