Situated in the northern part of San Diego County, San Marcos is home to California State University. Originally, the town was at the intersection of what is now Grand Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road but, in 1887, the railroad extended its track through the area, but about one mile from the center of town. By 1903, most of the town had moved along the railroad tracks to what is now Mission Road and Pico Avenue.
