Sylmar is a San Frenando community in Los Angeles, California. Its name is taken from the Latin words for sea (mar) and woods (silva), due to the fact that it was once the site of the largest olive groves in the world. It was the site of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake which destroyed the Olive View Hospital and was the inspiration for the 1974 movie “Earthquake.”
