Turlock, in Stanislaus County, was founded in 1871 by John Mitchell, a wealthy cattle rancher in the area, prompted by the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad. Rather than naming the railroad station, around which the town grew, after himself, Mitchell opted to name it after Turlough in County Mayo, Ireland.
