Carbondale is located approximately thirty miles north of Aspen, in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The town center is situated on the south bank of the Roaring Fork River, at its confluence with the Crystal River, while Mount Sopris dominated the horizon to the south. The town takes its name from the hometown of some of its early settlers, Carbondale, Pennsylvania.
