Longmont takes its name from Longs Peak, a mountain named for the explorer, Stephen Long, which is visible from the city. Longmont is located northeast of Boulder and northwest of Denver, Colorado. As a planned community founded in 1871 by a group of Chicagoans, Longmont was initially called the Chicago-Colorado Colony.
