Trinidad is the seat of Las Animas County, and its most populous city. Incorporated in 1879, for much of its history Trinidad was a coal town. While all of the coal mines have closed, companies have been drilling gas wells to extract coalbed methane from the reamining coal seams. The city's location at the foot of Raton Pass, along the Santa Fe Trail between St. Joseph, Missouri and Santa Fe, has always brought travelers through Trinidad.
