New Haven County is home to the city of West Haven, Connecticut. Settled in 1648, the area was then known as West Farms and was part of the Ne Haven Colony. In 1779, the British invaded New Haven Harbor and set foot in both East and West Haven. This arrival, as well as the depiction of teenaged militiaman Thomas Painter, is the focus of the city seal. It was incorporated as a town in 1921and as a city in 1961.
