Ponce de Leon landed near Melbourne Beach in 1513, becoming the first European to set foot in Florida. Established in 1883 by a retired Union general, Melbourne Beach is Brevard County's oldest beach community. Pineapples were grown there until 1895, when a cold winter wiped out the crops and ended commercial farming in the area. In 1921, the Melbourne Causeway connected the community to the mainland, and in 1923 it was incorporated as a town.
