Ocala was established in 1846 at the site of Fort King, constructed during the Seminole Wars. Rail service, in 1881, further encouraged development in the area. After most of its downtown area was destroyed by fire in 1883, Ocala was rebuilt using brick, granite and steel, instead of lumber, leading to its nickname, the Brick City.
