Siesta Key is not a town itself, but a barrier island off of the central western coast of Florida, between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Part of the island lies within the city of Sarasota, while the majority of it is a census-designated place in Sarasota County. Prior to the 1920s, the island was known as Sarasota Key.
