Tamarac began as a senior retirement community. However, in the early 1960s, a millionaire by the name of Ken Behring bought up all of the land and started developing. As he had made his fortune with a chain of car washes called "Car-A-Mat" he named his new city Tamarac, which is Car-A-Mat spelled backwards.
