Located next to a stream, Alpharetta began as a campground known as New Prospect Camp Ground. Chartered in late 1858, Alpharetta served as the seat of Milton County until that county was merged with Fulton County in order to avoid bankruptcy during the Great Depression. The city is now in north Fulton County, Georgia.
