Athens is part of a unified city-county governmental structure. In 1991, the original city of Athens abandoned its charter and formed a unified government with Clarke County, referred to as Athens-Clarke County, Georgia. The University of Georgia is located in this college town, and was responsible for the initial creation of the town of Athens.
