Established in 1850, Cartersville was named after Colonel Farish Carter. As Cassville, the county seat, was largely destroyed by Union troops under the command of General Shermain during the American Civil War, Cartersville became the seat of the newly formed Bartow County. Cartersville is located on the Etowah River, with Lake Allatoona nearby.
