Darien, a small city, is the seat of McIntosh County, Georgia. It is also the second oldest planned community in the state. The city was developed at the site of Fort King George, the oldest fort in Georgia, a British fort, constructed in 1721 and abandoned in 1727 after attacks by the Spanish. Initially called New Inverness, Darien was founded by Scottish Highlanders recruited in 1736 by James Oglethorpe.
