Tallapoosa began as a gold mining town. In its early years, the new settlement was known by a number of names, such as Pine Grove, Pineville and Possum Snout, a post office was established there under the name Tallapoosa in 1839, named for the nearby river that carried that name. Incorporated in 1860, it became known as a "Yankee city under a southern sun".
