Valdosta was incorporated in 1860, at which time the county government was relocated from nearby Troupville, a steamboat landing which was nearly abandoned after the railroad replaced the steamboat. Valdosta is known as the "azalea city" as the plant grows well there, and the city hosts an annual Azalea Festival each March.
