The city of Coeur d'Alene is the county seat of Kootenai County in the state of Idaho. Located in the northern panhandle of the state, Fort Coeur d'Alene was constructed on the orders of General William Tecumseh Sherman in the 1870s, the name being derived from the French phrase meaning “sharp-hearted” or “shrewd,” which the French Canadian fur traders affectionally called the local Indians. Later, that fort's name was changed to Fort Sherman in honor of the general.
