Incorporated in 1898, Sandpoint, Idaho, is the county seat of Bonner County and is adjacent to Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, which gives it life as a tourist and recreation town. Beginning in 1807, it the region was explored by the Northwest Company, and was the subject of an international dispute when the United States and Britain became involved in a border scuffle. In 1846, the signing of the Oregon Treaty ended the dispute when Britain ceded rights to land south of the 48th parallel.
