Champaign, Illinois is located in Champaign County. It was founded in 1855 when the Illinois Central Railroad laid tracks through town, then known as "West Urbana." In 1860, when it became a city, the name was changed to be the same as the county name. Both are named in honor of Champaign County in Ohio.
