Malta grew up around a railway station established in 1854. First a part of DeKalb, its inhabitants incorporated as a separate town, called Milton. Soon after its incorporation, the town's name was changed to Etna and, a few years later, to Malta, the name of its village and post office. The village of Malta is located in the north-central part of Illinois.
