Skokie, Illinois, is in Cook County, Illinois. Originally called Niles Centre, it was incorporated in 1888, the spelling was changed to Niles Center in 1910. Due to confusion with a nearby town called Niles, the name was again changed in 1940 to Skokie. The village gained notoriety in 1934 after the bullet-ridden, blanket-wrapped body of Baby Face Nelson was dumped in a ditch in town.
