The village of South Holland, Illinois is located in Cook County and is the seat of Thornton Township. It was settled in 1846 by immigrants from Holland, in the Netherlands. It is the setting of the Edna Ferber Pulitzer Prize-winning book "So Big," and is the only township in the Chicago Southland which still has blue laws, meaning most businesses are closed on Sundays. Furthermore, alcohol sales are banned in the village, as is pornographic material.
