Springfield is the capital of Illinois and the seat of Sangamon County. Settled in 1818, the original name of the city was Calhoun, named for John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. By 1832, Senator Calhoun had fallen out of favor with the public and the town was renamed Springfield. Its most famous past resident is Abraham Lincoln, who lived in Springfield from 1837 until he assumed the presidency in 1861.
