Washington, Illinois, is situated in Tazewell County. It was founded in 1825 by William Holland, Sr., who immigrated from North Carolina and was hired by the federal government as a blacksmith for the local Indians. The town was originally named Holland's Grove in his honor, but was later renamed after President George Washington.
