The region that was to become Clarksville was the gathering point for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and for his service in the Revolutionary War, the Virginia legislature rewarded Clark and other veterans with grants of land in the region, setting aside a thousand acres for the town. Both Clarksville and Clark County, which it is a part of, are named for George Rogers Clark. Today the town is home to the Colgate clock, one of the largest clocks in the world.
