Jasper is the seat of Dubois County, Indiana. The town was founded in 1830, was incorporated as a town in 1866, and as a city in 1915. When the commissioners suggested naming the new town "Eleanor" in honor of the wife of its founder, Joseph Enlow, the woman suggested, instead, that she be allowed to select a name from the Bible. She chose Jasper.
