Jeffersonville is the seat of Clark County, Indiana. In 1786, Fort Finney was constructed along the Ohio River, renamed to Fort Steuben in 1791, then abandoned in 1793. The settlement grew up around the fort. In 1802, a grid pattern designed by Thomas Jefferson was used in the formation of the city, and Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison decided to name the new city after Jefferson, as it was to be the only city designed by Jefferson.
