Lafayette is located northwest of Indianapolis, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and is the seat of that county. West Lafayette is on the other side of the Wabash River. The area that was to become Lafayette was settled as early as 1717, when the French government established Fort Ouiatenon across the river and three miles south of where the city now is. Lafayette was platted by William Digby, a river trader, in 1825, and was made the seat of the newly formed county the following year.
