Merrillville is located in Ross Township, within the east-central part of Lake County, the northwesternmost Indiana county. Originally, when it was primarily a Potawatomi settlement, the place that was to become Merrillville was known as McGwinn Village, which then became known as Wiggins Point, for Jeremiah Wiggins, its first white settler. Shortly after his death, the settlement was renamed Centerville and, finally, Merrillville, after Dudley and William Merrill.
